Applying for a TFN Online (myGovID)
The quickest way to apply is online using myGovID. However, you must meet the following criteria:
- You must be at least 15 years old.
- You must have a valid passport.
You can apply online using myGovID.
If you do not have a passport or are under the age of 15, you can use one of the other application methods listed below.
Apply at Australia Post
If you can attend an interview, you can apply for a TFN at a participating Australia Post retail outlet. There is no charge for lodging a TFN application via Australia Post.
Steps to Apply via Australia Post
- Complete the online form – The form is not compatible with Internet Explorer; use another browser.
- Print the application summary, which includes your application reference number.
- Schedule an interview within 30 days of completing your online form at a participating Australia Post outlet.
- Attend your interview and bring:
- Your application summary.
- Your original proof of identity documents.
- Sign your application at Australia Post during your interview.
You should receive your TFN within 28 days after your completed application and required documents are sighted by Australia Post.
Important: Do not submit another application if your TFN hasn’t arrived yet, as this can cause delays.
If You Haven’t Received Your TFN
If you have not received your TFN notification letter after 28 days of completing your application, contact the ATO for assistance.

Apply at a Services Australia Centre
If you are a Services Australia customer, you can apply for a TFN in person at a Services Australia service centre.
Steps to Apply via Services Australia
- Complete a paper TFN application form. You can get a copy of the form online.
- Send original proof of identity documents to Services Australia.
- Refer to the application instructions for the specific documents required.
- If you have granted Centrelink permission to receive your TFN from the ATO, select “To give to Centrelink” as your reason for requesting a TFN.
- After processing, Services Australia will send your TFN to both you and Centrelink.
Apply by Post
If you are unable to apply using the other available methods, you can apply for a TFN by post.
Steps to Apply via Post
- Complete a paper TFN application form, which you can obtain online or by phone using the ATO Publication Ordering Service.
- Submit your completed TFN application along with certified copies of your proof of identity documents.
- Send your application to the address provided on the form.
- It is best to provide certified copies of your proof of identity documents. Do not send original identity documents as they may not be returned.
